Principal Front End Engineer

Sydney, NSW Permanent

Take frontend architecture off the CTO and own it, on a product where real time collaboration meets very large datasets.

  • Own the front end architecture of the app and how design interacts with our data model and state management, to allow a real-time, collaborative product to continue to scale
  • Own the standard of front end engineering across the team — code quality, testing, review process and delivery
  • Build tooling and processes to streamline collaboration between product and engineering and reduce iterations
  • Guide key decisions, unblock hard problems and raise the bar for the team day to day
  • Influence the product roadmap, working closely with product to align technical dependencies and deliver value early to users
  • 5+ years React/TypeScript, 3+ years Redux
  • Structured thinker, strong at designing UI interactions against complex backend systems while balancing trade-offs
  • Prior experience in a tech leadership role, enjoys mentoring and developing team capability
  • Strong desire to learn and flex skills outside comfort zone

The role

This company builds planning and analytics software used by global apparel and retail brands to decide what they make, buy and range each season. Engineering is seven people, five of them on the frontend and all mid to senior. There is no frontend technical leadership today, so the CTO is carrying it. You would own direction for the React and Redux codebase while still shipping code. Near term work includes folding a standalone product back into the main app and rebuilding the forecasting engine so it scales.

About you

  • You have owned client side state and rendering architecture at data density: collaborative editing, virtualised grids, or datasets in the hundreds of thousands of rows
  • 5+ years React and TypeScript, commercial Redux, and real opinions about store architecture
  • Still writing production code, and you want to keep it that way
  • You have set standards across a team of peers — code review, testing or delivery practice — and made them stick
  • You work directly with product and design rather than taking tickets
  • Sydney based with full working rights

The offer

  • 50/50 hybrid working in Sydney after initial onboarding
  • Permanent, with technical ownership at principal level
  • A team small enough that your decisions show up in the product quickly
  • AI tooling is used across the team, with clear rules, and never at the expense of quality
  • Tight-knit engineering group that values thoughtful engineering, learning and collaboration
