What a year it’s been. Once in a career type stuff.
We wanted to make sense of what’s been happening in Australia specifically, so we started asking around. That turned into a community survey of people building software here, and longer interviews with the people running engineering teams. The result is this white paper to help others make sense of it too.
Read the report or the TL;DR:
- It was a good year that wore people out.
- AI is no longer optional.
- How software gets built is being rethought, quickly.
- Juniors are the industry’s open question.
- Tokens became a management question this year, and most teams haven’t answered it.
- The fear is deskilling, not displacement.
- Hiring is turning into an audition.
- The skills that grew are the ones that were always hard to teach.
The full report has the numbers, the quotes and the detail behind each of these. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed. Especially my teammates at Lookahead: Fiona, Debbie, Sarah, Kyle, Irena and Chris.
