If someone you know is looking to hire or be hired, please think of us.

We will take good care of anyone you refer. We can answer questions they have about the market or talk through ways to optimise their hiring process. We can even introduce them to other specialist recruiters if their skills are not in areas we know extremely well. So if you're unsure, refer them anyway.

Successful referrals are rewarded with your choice of a gift voucher, donation to charity or community event sponsorship to the value of $1,000. (Eligible three months after successful placement. Referral must be to a client or candidate we are not currently working with.)

Meet Debbie

What do you do at Lookahead and how long have you been working with us?

I’m a technical recruiter, recruiting for JavaScript & Ruby roles and been there just over 2 years.

What’s your background? Where were you in the tech industry before joining Lookahead?

Previously I was working at a start up as a Product Manager (Risk Management Platform) which initially involved doing a bit of everything, setting up sales demos, fixing CSS bugs and grew into Product Management over time. Prior to that I did a bit for freelance web design, worked for an e-Commerce company doing HTML newsletters and graphics.

What do you like about Lookahead?

The team I work with and the people I get to work with. Talking with people doing interesting things and getting the big picture of what’s happening in the tech community. I enjoy the autonomy of how to prioritise my day and how best to do my job. I enjoy the openness of our team - along with our successes, we share our frustrations and setbacks and we all get to learn from each other.

What was the last book you read or podcast you listened to?

I’m currently reading “The Unicorn Project: A Novel about Developers, Digital Disruption, and Thriving in the Age of Data” and before that I read “Catch and Kill” by Ronan Farrow. I also recently enjoyed “WeCrashed: The Rise and Fall of WeWork” podcast by Wondery and the “Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup” book.

If you weren’t at Lookahead where would you be working or what is your dream job?

Working in tech in a remote team. It makes sense that this would be product management, but job title isn’t important to me. The main thing would be working with people I knew I was going to learn new things from and build on the skills I have.

First Car?

An old Mitsubishi Lancer which got written off in a big hail storm that hit the Eastern Suburbs in the 90s. The insurance payout was the best thing about it :)

Hidden Talent?

I have excellent gift wrapping skills. I’m also very good at finding things, but I suspect my family makes me think that so they can avoid looking properly themselves!

Proudest Accomplishment?

I asked my daughter this, and she said it’s having her - but her three brothers might have something to say about that!

The Most unusual item in your office or home?

I have a collection of used phones and gift cards. Lame, I know.

Favourite Sports Team?

What’s sport?

What makes you weird?

I don’t like wearing nail polish because I can feel the weight of it on my nails and find it very distracting. Apparently other people don’t experience that!

What piece of technology seems like magic to you?

Scrimba coding tuturials- you watch the video tutorial and you can edit the code that same video! Magic! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDIlR71omg4

Guilty Pleasure?

Vanilla custard slice from the local bakery, or the Quarter Pounder my son buys me when I pick him up from his shift at Macca’s at midnight. (Please don’t judge me.)
