If someone you know is looking to hire or be hired, please think of us.

We will take good care of anyone you refer. We can answer questions they have about the market or talk through ways to optimise their hiring process. We can even introduce them to other specialist recruiters if their skills are not in areas we know extremely well. So if you're unsure, refer them anyway.

Successful referrals are rewarded with your choice of a gift voucher, donation to charity or community event sponsorship to the value of $1,000. (Eligible three months after successful placement. Referral must be to a client or candidate we are not currently working with.)

Recruiting field notes

A brief mention in the SMH

“Candidates should really keep track of where their CV is going,” he says. “‘Really good candidates are quite careful about where they send their resume and some avoid job boards altogether. They don’t send it out indiscriminately to everyone that will read it.”

Thoughts on interviewing

I recommend having two interviews, with the more technical interview coming last. This balances the need to be thorough while minimising the chance of missing out on talent.

Valve's new employee handbook

Not something I expected to read cover to cover on a Sunday night. It’s fascinating to learn how they keep a completely flat organisational structure.

Don't work

Reminds me of the saying “Do something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”.

My thoughts, 22 lunches later

I went to lunch with someone every weekday in November. No lunch was eaten at my desk, no exceptions.

The November Lunch Experiment

For the month of November, I’ve quit eating at my desk. It will be a fun experiment. I’ll post photos and a wrap up once it’s all done.

Recruiting and marketing

Smart companies are using their recruitment process as a marketing exercise. Any company actively hiring during a downturn has a positive story to tell.

Interview tip: Be like Dr Karl

During an interview, explain your train of thought aloud. This allows you to further elaborate on your experience. You will probably end up close to the real answer or even get some help from the interviewer along the way.

I think we should talk.

Have a look at Jason Zimdars’ pitch for a job at 37Signals: http://jasonzimdars.com/svn/. He’s confident, honest and most of all; human.

“Although I’m not coding on a daily basis, I’ve really enjoyed meeting developers and chatting with them. Having that technical background definitely helps me understand what developers and companies are after. I’ve also spent a lot of time giving people general advice on job searching and resume writing. They really appreciate that.”
